Ideas to help churches think about recovery

Engage your youth group.

At St Matthews Thorpe Hamlet we held a discussion with our youth group who created two posters for the Church, which we put up with an explanation of what we had done. The advantage of this was it started a conversation and meant that our posters were handmade and distinctive to us.

Run a workshop.

Recovery Friendly Church will happily run a workshop for a Deanery or group of Churches, just contact us, but there is no reason not to run your own. Try and remember the importance of values. When Churches identify values they are ongoing unlike plans which we complete and then they are done. Values also permeate our thinking about all the ways we worship together, care for each other and engage in mission. Also try and focus on building up confidence, recognising what is already good in our congregations and try to make space to listen to those who are managing their own mental health.

Prepare bible studies.

We will be putting some bible studies up as free resources soon, but the bible has so much to say about respect, healing, hope, community and empowerment that you can probably come up with your own that reflect your own local context.
